Common Burner Faults and Troubleshooting Guide

Learn to identify and troubleshoot common burner faults before they cause costly downtime. This guide covers lockout, ignition failure, flame instability, and more.

Burner faults can cause costly production downtime and safety risks. Understanding common issues helps facilities respond quickly and determine when professional intervention is needed.

Burner Lockout

Lockout is the most common burner fault, occurring when the safety control box detects a fault condition. Causes include flame detection failure, incorrect air pressure, fuel supply interruption, or control box component failure. Pressing the reset button may temporarily resolve the issue, but persistent lockout requires professional diagnosis.

Ignition Failure

If the burner fails to ignite, check the spark electrode position and condition. Electrodes should be clean, correctly gapped, and producing a strong spark. Verify that the fuel supply is open and at correct pressure. Inspect ignition transformer operation. If the burner ignites but promptly locks out, the flame detection system may need cleaning or replacement.

Flame Instability

Unstable flames characterised by flickering, lifting, or yellow tipping indicate combustion problems. Common causes include incorrect air-to-fuel ratio, dirty burner components, draught disturbances, or gas pressure fluctuations. Combustion analysis will identify the root cause and guide corrective tuning.

Excessive Soot or Smoke

Soot indicates incomplete combustion, typically caused by insufficient combustion air, dirty burner components, incorrect nozzle sizing, or poor fuel quality. Soot buildup reduces efficiency, increases emissions, and can damage heat exchanger surfaces. Regular cleaning and combustion tuning prevents soot problems.

Unusual Noises

Popping, rumbling, or vibration during burner operation suggests ignition delay, fuel pressure issues, or mechanical component wear. Delayed ignition can cause damaging pressure buildup in the combustion chamber and requires immediate professional attention.

When to Call a Professional

While routine checks can identify potential issues, any persistent fault requires professional diagnosis. Burner Pro's technicians are equipped with advanced diagnostic tools and OEM knowledge to quickly resolve burner faults and restore your operations.
